Exhibition: Jeff Weber / Furen Dai, at the Microscope gallery, in Chelsea
The Consulate in New York sponsored an exhibition by Luxembourg-based artist Jeff Weber and his wife, Furen Dai, opening the 15th edition of the Event Series, dedicated to emerging artists.
Jeff Weber's short films, screened in their original 16 and 35mm formats, occupy two distinct worlds. In lyrical documents, such as those of a university picket line or a flock of pigeons fighting over seeds outside his window, Weber engages with the intimate and the personal diary, seeking to use film the way others use their phones to share moments of their daily lives. In a series of flicker films, he uses physics, machine learning, and algorithms to create frame-by-frame sequences of black, white, and gray tones corresponding to scores generated by artificial neural networks, sine-wave frequencies, and even Dai's brainwaves as she watched one of these films.
