A Quarter-Century Later: America Marks the 25th Anniversary of 9/11

September 11, 2026, marks the 25th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks. The quarter-century since the devastating strikes on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the crash of Flight 93 is being observed across the United States with ceremonies of remembrance in honor of the almost 3000 victims of that fateful day.

The traditional remembrance ceremony at the Ground Zero memorial in New York City follows its deeply emotional, established protocol but introduces a historic change.

The reading of the names of the 2,977 victims by their family members begins at 08:40 AM local time, the moment when the first plane hit the World Trade Center in 2001. For the first time, a seventh moment of silence will be added to the ceremony. This is specifically dedicated to the tens of thousands of first responders, recovery workers, and residents who have fallen ill or passed away over the last 25 years due to toxic dust exposure.
