Lea Melki was born in Luxembourg to Lebanese parents. She started the violin at the age of 4 at the Luxembourg Conservatory. At 9, Lea and her family left Steinsel for her father’s work and moved to Dubai, where she continued her violin studies joining the Emirates Youth Symphony Orchestra from 2001 to 2009.
After graduating from high school in 2009, she moved to Paris to enter the French preparatory classes to the entrance of Engineering Graduate Schools. She put the violin on standby, and received her Engineering Degree from Telecom Physique Strasbourg along with a Master Degree in Medical Imaging from the University of Strasbourg. In the fall of 2015, she moved to New York to start her PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Columbia University in the Ultrasound Elasticity Imaging Laboratory. Her main research interest focuses on the electromechanical behavior of the heart to create new non-invasive diagnostic tools.
A passionate violinist, Lea simultaneously joined the Columbia University Orchestra conducted by Jeffrey Milarsky from the Juilliard School.
