Jean Muller was born in Luxembourg City. He attended his first piano lessons with Marie-José Hengesch at the Conservatory of Luxembourg at the age of six. Only one year later, he gave his first public performance, creating a work of his compatriot Alexander Mullenbach. At 15, after receiving a scholarship to study for one semester with Professor Teofils Bikis at the Latvian State Academy for Music in Riga, he decided to devote his life to music. He pursued his studies in Brussels, Paris and Munich with Evgeny Moguilevsky, Gerhard Oppitz, Eugen Indjic and Michael Schäfer. In addition, his father Gary Muller, himself a pianist and teacher served as a mentor and largely influenced his musical development. Attended numerous master classes, Jean Muller also received professional advice from distinguished artists, including Anne Queffélec, Leon Fleischer, Janos Starker, Fou Ts'ong.
Muller is the recipient of numerous awards and first prize winner of the International Poulenc Competition, the Arcachon Competition and the Jean Françaix Competition. In addition, he is a laureate of the Tribune Internationale des Jeunes Interprètes (UNESCO-EBU).
On several occasions, Jean Muller has given solo performances for Their Royal Highnesses Grand-Duke Henri and Grand-Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg. In 2007, Grand-Duke Henri elevated Muller to the rank of Knight of the Civil and Military Order of Merit of Adolph of Nassau. In 2008, the Luxembourg Grand-Ducal Family requested Muller to give a recital during Their official State visit to the Swedish Court and he had the honour to perform for Their Majesties King Carl-Gustav of Sweden and King Albert of Belgium.
Jean Muller has appeared in major concert halls including Megaron Athens, Forbidden City Concert Hall Beijing, Philharmonie Luxembourg, Culture and Congress Centre Luzern, Salle Cortot Paris, Arsenal Metz, Philharmonie München, Liederhalle Stuttgart. He is regularly invited to perform at international festivals, included the Bourglinster Festival and Echternach Festival in Luxembourg, the A*Devantgarde Festival in Munich, the Festival de Saintes in France, KotorArt Festival in Montenegro, the Incontri Pianistica di Cosenza in Italy, and, in the United States with the Piano Texas International Festival in Fort Worth, Texas. In 2008, his cyclic performance of all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas in concert received both public and critical acclaim. That same year, Muller made his first appearance in New York City at the Consulate General of Luxembourg. And, in 2009, he toured for the first time in China with ten solo recitals. Muller also performs extensively with orchestras such as the Bavarian State Orchestra, the Münchner Symphoniker, the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, the Solistes Européens Luxembourg, under the bâton of leading conductors such as Frédéric Chaslin, Jack-Martin Händler, Zubin Mehta, Bramwell Tovey.
He has received very favourable coverage from the international press highlighting his ability to deliver intellectually and emotionally well balanced interpretations. His recordings have received excellent press reviews in “Excellentia and Supersonic Awards” by the magazine Pizzicato; “Coup de cœur” by Piano Magazine; and “Arte.tv - The CD Selection”. www.jeanmuller.lu
